The Bible Way for
Worship
Are you cheating on
your God?
Few
things harm a marriage like infidelity. Hearts are broken by betrayal,
grief and guilt when it comes to light that a spouse has been
unfaithful. Vows, devotion and the future of the couple are all
seriously re-evaluated. Cheating on a spouse is extremely detrimental to
the relationship.
God is
angered and betrayed when His people replace Him in their heart with
another god. God views idolatry as spiritual adultery. He vividly taught
this lesson through the life and family of his prophet Hosea. “When the
Lord first spoke through Hosea, the Lord said to Hosea, ‘Go, take to
yourself a wife of harlotry; for the land commits flagrant harlotry,
forsaking the Lord’” (Hos. 1:2). Hosea was to marry one who had been
promiscuous with many different lovers. Thus the Lord illustrated what
it was like being in covenant relationship with a people that despised,
abused and broke the covenant.
Likewise,
God is outraged and betrayed when we despise and reject the covenant
relationship we have with Him through the blood of Christ. When we set
aside the grace given to us in order to pursue worldly lust or pleasure,
who is the God of our life? We can be guilty of cheating on the almighty
God with one of any number of idols: wealth, success, greed, immorality,
mammon etc. God will not tolerate such betrayal (Heb. 10:26-31).
“For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay.” And again,
“The Lord will judge His people” (Heb. 10:30). |
