Many would
answer this question, "absolutely not." A popular concept of God is a
kind grandfather, sitting away on a cloud looking to spoil believers
with grace and wealth. This god is a pacifist, he’s always there in a
jam and very "low-maintenance" (i.e. he doesn’t ask much from his
followers). The idea that he would disapprove of something, let alone
"hate" or "abhor" something is out of the question. He’s the god of
love, right?
This picture of God may be boldly proclaimed within
feel-good gospels but the Bible reveals a different God. One whose
character is love but also just and hole (1 John 4:8; 2 Thess. 1:5-10; 1
Pet. 1:13-17). One attribute of God does not cancel another and
scripture shows that God abhors all that is antagonistic to His
character. Proverbs 6: 16-19 is sufficient to make the point that there
are things a loving God can and does hate.
1. The Lord abhors a proud look. God loves
humility and hates arrogance.
2. The Lord abhors a lying tongue. God
loves truth and hates deception.
3. The Lord abhors hands that shed innocent blood.
The 30th anniversary of Roe vs Wade this past week showed
celebrations that lifted up such hands.
4. The Lord abhors hearts that devise
wickedness. God hates the efforts to create things such as computer
viruses and pornographic materials.
5. The Lord abhors feet swiftly running to
do evil. Such are those who look for opportunities to sin and get
into mischief.
6. The Lord abhors a false witness. God hates
injustice and perjury.
7. The Lord abhors those that sow discord among
brethren. Gossips, whisperers and tale-bearers beware.
It is time for a gut-check. We cannot rationalize
sinful behavior thinking God is too loving to punish such iniquity. The
Love of God was shown in the sacrifice of Jesus that we may obtain
forgiveness for such behavior. Yet we must repent and cease such
actions, for such things our loving God hates!
